ASD Class Refused for Carrigallen School

magpie's picture

The refusal of a special class for children with Autism at Carrigallen National School in Leitrim is a huge blow.

Thats according to the Home School Community Liason officer Barbara Jones who says yesterdays annuncement is very disappointing for the teachers, children and parents involved.

The school has been refused a special class for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder despite the fact that no such class exists in any school in county Leitrim.

The National Council for Special Education has turned down the application on the basis that there is an ASD class seventeen miles from Carrigallen.

However this class is located in Kiloe National School in County Longford which it's understood is full to capacity.

Its a double blow for the school who this week have had their allocations of special needs assistants halved down to one and a half.

Speaking on Lets Talk Ms Jones says these measures have a knock on affect throughout the school.
