We are pleased to learn that Connacht Gold has selected Irish Autism Action to be its Charity of the Year for 2010. Connacht Gold has always been very supportive of good causes in the community and this year they wish to help support local autism initiatives in the region. As part of the partnership they will make a direct financial contribution and hope it can be supplemented through staff fund-raising efforts in 2010.
By Maresa Fagan, Roscommon Herald, 8th December 2009.
Christmas has come early for five year-old Calum Leyden from Strokestown. Calum is enjoying a new lease of life thanks to his new canine companion, Juni, an assistance dog for families with children with Autism.
Councillor Orla Leyden has proposed that a seven acre field owned by the local council in the Lisnamult area of Roscommon town be used for an all weather sports area to cope with a range of sports as well as giving Special Olympics athletes somewhere to train.
At present many sports groups have to travel to Castelrea or Athlone to use all weather facilities and a proposal to develop the Lisnamult site would be aided by the local Residents' and Tenants' Association, chaired by Anthony Doolan, who are open to working with other groups for the good of their community.

Upgrading of services for children with Autism sought
THE NEED to upgrade and update services for children with Autism throughout County Roscommon was raised at a recent meeting of the HSE West Regional Health Forum in Galway.
Cllr Eugene Murphy called on the HSE to outline the services available to children with autism in County Roscommon. The HSE pointed out that children on the Autistic Spectrum were provided with services through two different service streams in County Roscommon.
"The Brothers of Charity Services started in Roscommon in 1975 in Ivy House, Castlerea. Since then it has grown to provide services to all age groups of people who have an intellectual disability and autism.
The Autism Services is a county-based service to people with autism in the Roscommon Region.".
