An Introduction to Person Centred Planning (Dublin, Cork, Longford workshops)
Person-centred planning has at its core a belief that all people have the right to plan lives that are personally meaningful and satisfying, that all people have talents and strengths and the right and the responsibility to develop.
This workshop will give participants a better understanding of the Person Centred Planning process by exploring the types of planning that focus on gifts, capacities and strengths of individuals with Intellectual Disabilities and Autism

How to Advocate for your family member with a disability (Dublin, Cork, Longford workshops)
Family members are natural advocates as they know their relation better than anyone else.
In this workshop you will learn how to present your concerns and problems in writing, prepare for meetings, and search for win-win solutions.
Your will learn how to use your emotions as a source of energy and power, and how to focus on getting appropriate services and supports for your family member with Intellectual Disability or Autism.

How to build Circles of Support (Dublin, Cork, Longford workshops)
The idea of a Circle of Support is simple, to help someone establish a social network.
When people have experienced broken relationships and systems which segregate and disempower, creating such a network requires deliberate action to make opportunities for natural relationships to flourish.
This workshop aims to assist people to develop, facilitate and maintain Circles of Support that will make positive life changes.

Free Christmas party open to all individuals with autism - children and adults and their parents and siblings on the 12th December 2010 from 3 pm to 6pm at the Shannon key West Hotel Rooskey, Co Leitrim. Refreshments will be served. The aim of this evening is to make this a fun event suitable for all ages. Santa will pay a visit on the day (please leave a gift wrapped and label with you child(ren) names on them at reception and santa will present this gift to your child(ren). Please note the value of the gift shall be no more than €10 .

MWB Autism support are a support group based in Longford but has members from Roscommon, Cavan, Leitrim, Westmeath. MWB Autism Support are holding their next support meeting as follows:

A major fund-raising campaign is taking place in aid of MWB Autism Support. In late October, or early November, six people are going to take part in a tandem skydive, in the hope of raising funds for this new organisation.
The six brave people are: Dave Carrig, Michael Bryson, Kevin Daly, Ronan Clarke, Sean Crossan and Brendan Doyle.
Sponsorship cards can be found in local businesses throughout Longford, and from Dave Carrig on 085 741 2541.
We are pleased to learn that Connacht Gold has selected Irish Autism Action to be its Charity of the Year for 2010. Connacht Gold has always been very supportive of good causes in the community and this year they wish to help support local autism initiatives in the region. As part of the partnership they will make a direct financial contribution and hope it can be supplemented through staff fund-raising efforts in 2010.
Local politicians criticised cuts in the number of Special Needs Assistants in Longford and Westmeath this week but the exact detail of the cuts remain unclear. The Department of Education and Skills said this week that it is unable to release details with regard to the cutbacks in Special Needs Assistants (SNAs) in Co Longford schools. "The figures relating to the cuts are not available on a regional basis," the spokesperson said.

The true spirit of Christmas was evident in the village of Ballinamuck when an autistic child received the one gift he really wanted for Christmas recently. Matthew Byrne, the 11 year old son of Maria and Simon, was diagnosed with autism at the age of three and in recent years, he has developed a fascination with traffic lights.

New autism unit for Ardscoil Phadraig

It's good news for one north Longford Secondary school this week with the announcement that it is to receive a new autism unit in the coming months.
This latest development means that Ardscoil Phadraig in Granard is the first second level school in Co Longford to benefit from such a facility and highlights the growing need for the incorporation of such facilities into the Irish education system.

The hunt is on to find a 'real' set of traffic lights for an 11-year-old autistic boy from north Longford. Matthew Byrne from Ballinamuck was diagnosed with autism at the age of three and in recent years he has developed a fascination with traffic lights, which his father Simon says, indicates his son's development as Matthew and his family cope with his illness on a daily basis.

"Paddy Doyle was born in County Wexford, Ireland, in 1951 and now lives in County Longford. Married with three grown up sons, he is recognized as one or Ireland's leading disability activists .. A frequent contributor to television, radio and the print media on matters as diverse as the role of the church in caring for children to the legalization of marijuana for medical use. He has also travelled extensively throughout Europe and the United States, speaking at conferences about disability and child sexual abuse.
