It was a night of great food, fun and laughter, when a major male carers' celebration event entitled "What About Me?" was held at the Erne Dynasty Restaurant in Enniskillen recently.

The event, which was organised by local social enterprise Me Unltd, in partnership with Positive Futures and the Western Health and Social Care Trust, was well attended with over 60 male carers and their families attending.

"Autism NI’s Mission in brief is to 'ensure that individuals with Autism and their carers are valued members of the community'. We achieve this through a bi-lateral approach of parent support and training for parents and professionals.

Autism NI's training department team has a wealth of qualifications, expertise and experience. As well as drawing on the wide range of skills within our own professional team, we also have links and longstanding relationships with a consortium of local and international specialist trainers.

Noel Bannon, a 21-year-old Enniskillen man who has autism, has had to live across the water for the last 10 years because nowhere in Northern Ireland could meet his special needs.

Noel's parents, Geraldine and Frank would love to bring him home but are faced with virtually insurmountable obstacles.

"Noel began Daldorch School in East Ayrshire, Scotland, which is run by the National Autistic Society, in 2000 after his placement in Northern Ireland broke down and he has remained there since," said Geraldine.
