Boy pens letter to reveal need for respite care (Aug 24, 2010)

My name is Stephen and I’m a 14-year-old boy living with a sister who suffers from autism and ADHD.  Life is very hard having a sister with special needs – it’s all about Lorna.

The mornings are always a struggle in our house, as it’s Lorna’s way or no way. She dictates when she gets up, how she gets washed, and even the way I eat my breakfast. If I go against Lorna in the slightest way, all hell will break loose.

Ring-fence funding for disabilities, agencies urge (Irish Examiner, 15/10/09)

By Noel Baker, Irish Examiner, October 15, 2009

A COALITION of agencies supporting people with disabilities have urged the Government to ring-fence funding for the area in the upcoming budget.

Slamming the new Programme for Government as the work of a first year economics student, the groups – Inclusion Ireland, the National Federation of Voluntary Bodies, Irish Autism Action, Down Syndrome Ireland and the National Parents and Siblings Alliance – also claimed money could be saved through earlier intervention which would allow children a better chance at a normal life.

Son’s 10-year exile across the water

The Impartial Reporter, 23rd April, 2009

Noel Bannon, a 21-year-old Enniskillen man who has autism, has had to live across the water for the last 10 years because nowhere in Northern Ireland could meet his special needs.

Noel's parents, Geraldine and Frank would love to bring him home but are faced with virtually insurmountable obstacles.

"Noel began Daldorch School in East Ayrshire, Scotland, which is run by the National Autistic Society, in 2000 after his placement in Northern Ireland broke down and he has remained there since," said Geraldine.
