One day workshop

The Aim of the Course
To enable participants to build more fulfilling, interactive and equal relationships with people who have profound learning disabilities and complex needs.
The Course encourages participants to REFLECT on their own experiences and make CHANGES in their practice. It is a practical and empowering course.

The Course is suitable for:
Anyone who wants to communicate and relate more closely with people with profound learning disabilities and complex needs. It is aimed at Day-Service and Support Staff, Home Leaders and Service Managers, Occupational Therapists, Speech & Language Therapists, Teachers and Families.

9.30am Introductions
10.00am A critical incident exercise
10.25am Feedback to the group and discussion of findings
10.50am BREAK
11.05am Introduction to the basic principles of Intensive Interaction
12noon Video – Phoebe Caldwell ‘Learning the Language’
12.30pm LUNCH
1.30pm Intensive Interaction and Autism
2.15pm Trouble shooting – pros and cons of this approach
2.40pm BREAK
2.55pm Plans for action (small groups)
3.35pm Feedback to the group and discussion of plans
4.00pm Conclusions, handouts and evaluation

Summary: This course is intended to be a practical introduction to implementing interactive methods within day to day work with people who have profound learning disabilities and complex needs who may seem difficult to reach.

Learning Objective of the Course
Participants will
• Identify challenges (from their own practice) to building relationships
• Learn about the basic principles of Intensive Interaction
• Explore how these techniques can be applied to relationship building with people with profound learning disabilities and complex needs.
Plan how to implement and evaluate those techniques.
