Healing the Gut
Following on from environmental insults combining with genetic susceptability it is hypothesized that some autistic symptoms result from digestion/gut problems that chemically affect the central nervous system. The Specific Carbohydrate diet (SCD) and the Gut and Psychology Syndrome diet (GAPS Diet) both aim to heal the gut with follow-on therapies. The Gluten Free and Casein Free (GFCF) Diet is for gluten/casein intolerances.
Treating Autism 7th Biomedical Conference & Exhibition, QUEEN MARY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON, MILE END CAMPUS, 327 MILE END ROAD, LONDON E1 4NS.
FOR PARENTS, CARERS & PROFESSIONALS
Treating Autism are delighted to announce our two day Biomedical Conference & Exhibition which returns to the Queen Mary, University of London this year. Come to hear parents and practitioners sharing their experiences on various treatments that are helping our children.
We have an exciting programme of speakers including:
Is your child affected by some of the following?
Bowel problems, constipation / diarrohea, fussy eater, poor sleep, poor eye contact, history of ear infections, dark circles under eyes, poor speech, hyperactivity, eating non food items, craves milk / yoghurts /bread
Although there is no known unique cause of ASD, there is growing evidence that autism can be caused by a variety of problems.
For many children, ASD symptoms improve with treatment and with age. Some children with autism grow up to lead normal or near-normal lives. Therapies and behavioural interventions are designed to remedy specific symptoms and can bring about substantial improvement.
"The idea that disease starts in the gut is not new, but a Cambridge practitioner has taken it a stage farther by showing how the restoration of gut flora plays a crucial part in the treatment of children with learning and behavioural disorders. CAM editor Simon Martin talks to Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD, of the Cambridge Nutrition Clinic."

"The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) is a dietary treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease. In spite of the fact that most doctors tell us that 'food has nothing to do with these disorders,' many of us have found that by following the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, it is possible to reverse the symptoms of intestinal diseases such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, irritable bowel, spastic colon, and celiac disease.".

"It is generally accepted within the autism community that autism is a behaviorally-based disorder. Conventionally, diagnosis is based on observation of behavior and treatment focused on alleviating challenging behaviors. A growing number of individuals within this expanding community also acknowledge that there exists an equally relevant biomedical component to the disorder that should not be overlooked in planning treatment programs for individuals who have an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The Gut and Psychology Syndrome Diet has its foundation on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) created by Dr. Sidney Valentine Haas to heal digestive disorders. SCD gained great popularity after a mother, Elaine Gottschall, healed her own child and became an advocate for SCD. Elaine Gottschall is also the author of the popular book Breaking the Vicious Cycle. Intestinal Health Through Diet.

Visit Autism, ADD, ADHD, constipation, candida, asthma, learning / behavioral problems & depression: Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS) Autism, ADD, ADHD, constipation, candida, asthma, learning / behavioral problems & depression: Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS) This is a review of a talk by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride regarding the GAPS diet. The GAPS Diet (based on SCD) is proposed as a dietry based treatment for ADD, ADHD, learning/ behavior/ social problems, autism, depression, reflux, constipation and other digestive issues.
The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), has been used successfully by many people to treat the following: Crohn's disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Celiac disease, Cystic Fibrosis, Chronic Diarrhea, candidiasis, and autism. Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet™ offers a diverse and delicious collection of 150 SCD-friendly recipes.
The SCD is based on the premise that limiting the diet to simple sugars (usually for a few months) will starve out toxic organisms in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and restore gut integrity and immune function. Some families report good results with ASD even following limited success on the GFCF Diet.
"A critical review of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundatation of America. The diet is considered as a natural treatment option for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). If you do decide to put your child on the diet, he says, do it under the guidance of an experienced nutritionist. Decide on a reasonable time frame - say, three to four months - and don't do anything else new for the duration of that period."

Introduction and brief history of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD).
The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) is a strict grain-free, lactose-free, and sucrose-free diet that goes beyond the standard theory of gluten-intolerance being the sole culprit for pathology in the bowel.
