Healing the Gut

Following on from environmental insults combining with genetic susceptability it is hypothesized that some autistic symptoms result from digestion/gut problems that chemically affect the central nervous system. The Specific Carbohydrate diet (SCD) and the Gut and Psychology Syndrome diet (GAPS Diet) both aim to heal the gut with follow-on therapies. The Gluten Free and Casein Free (GFCF) Diet is for gluten/casein intolerances.

Causes of ASD

Although there is no known unique cause of ASD, there is growing evidence that autism can be caused by a variety of problems.

Treatments and Interventions

For many children, ASD symptoms improve with treatment and with age. Some children with autism grow up to lead normal or near-normal lives. Therapies and behavioural interventions are designed to remedy specific symptoms and can bring about substantial improvement.

"The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) is a dietary treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease. In spite of the fact that most doctors tell us that 'food has nothing to do with these disorders,' many of us have found that by following the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, it is possible to reverse the symptoms of intestinal diseases such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, irritable bowel, spastic colon, and celiac disease.".

Great Plains Laboratory

"It is generally accepted within the autism community that autism is a behaviorally-based disorder. Conventionally, diagnosis is based on observation of behavior and treatment focused on alleviating challenging behaviors. A growing number of individuals within this expanding community also acknowledge that there exists an equally relevant biomedical component to the disorder that should not be overlooked in planning treatment programs for individuals who have an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The Gut and Psychology Syndrome Diet has its foundation on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) created by Dr. Sidney Valentine Haas to heal digestive disorders. Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) and Autism

The SCD is based on the premise that limiting the diet to simple sugars (usually for a few months) will starve out toxic organisms in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and restore gut integrity and immune function. Some families report good results with ASD even following limited success on the GFCF Diet.

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet: Does It Work?

"A critical review of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundatation of America. The diet is considered as a natural treatment option for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). If you do decide to put your child on the diet, he says, do it under the guidance of an experienced nutritionist. Decide on a reasonable time frame - say, three to four months - and don't do anything else new for the duration of that period."
