Fundraising
I’m a superhero. By day I parent two little boys with Autism, by night (and weekends) I don an evening gown, grab a radio mic and perform soul music in front of crowds of people. I’m lucky to have such a release, but so many autistic families aren't.
...I’m every kind of excited to announce that our Charity this year is the Autism Family Support Group, Donegal. This organization helps families by providing seminars, summer programs, and family support as well as creating Autism Awareness.
A major fund-raising campaign is taking place in aid of MWB Autism Support. In late October, or early November, six people are going to take part in a tandem skydive, in the hope of raising funds for this new organisation.
The six brave people are: Dave Carrig, Michael Bryson, Kevin Daly, Ronan Clarke, Sean Crossan and Brendan Doyle.
Sponsorship cards can be found in local businesses throughout Longford, and from Dave Carrig on 085 741 2541.
The Challenge: Gerry Duffy and Ken Whitelaw will attempt to run 32 consecutive marathons in 32 counties in just 32 days! This promises to be a truly amazing accomplishment should they be successful. Starting on Friday July 2nd 2010 they will visit the entire 32 counties running 26.2 miles each and every day.
This event is being co-ordinated and organised entirely by Irish Autism Action (Charity Number CHY 14656) and Autism NI (Charity Number XR 22944). In addition Gerry and Ken also wish to make a donation to the Irish Cancer Society (Charity Number CHY 5863).

We are pleased to learn that Connacht Gold has selected Irish Autism Action to be its Charity of the Year for 2010. Connacht Gold has always been very supportive of good causes in the community and this year they wish to help support local autism initiatives in the region. As part of the partnership they will make a direct financial contribution and hope it can be supplemented through staff fund-raising efforts in 2010.

Portumna Soccer Competition - Autism Fundraiser
Last year saw the rejuvenation of the Easter weekend five a side soccer tournament and this proved to be a big success with both with players and supporters alike. The aim of the tournament is to raise much needed funds for two schools which are helping to enhance the standards of life for the children who attend them while providing entertainment and exercise for the people of the town and the surrounding areas.

By Maresa Fagan, Roscommon Herald, 8th December 2009.
Christmas has come early for five year-old Calum Leyden from Strokestown. Calum is enjoying a new lease of life thanks to his new canine companion, Juni, an assistance dog for families with children with Autism.
DOZENS of autistic children will not get specialist trained assistance dogs next year because of Government cutbacks. The Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind (IGDB) said it needs €1.5 million in 2010 to train another 40 assistance dogs for families of children with autism, like it did this year.
The annual benefit dance for the Bright Stars autism support group in Kingscourt took place last weekend in Cabra Castle and raised €5,000 to help support children with autism in the area. Maeve Leahy, one of the group's founders, said it was a great night with great support from the local people. Entertainment on the night included Irish dancing, line dancing at a Joe Dolan tribute by Tom O'Rourke.

The Variety Club of Ireland are organising another Santa Stroll this year. All proceeds from the walk will be divided equally between 4 charities: Variety Club of Ireland, IRISH AUTISM ACTION, St. Michael’s House and St. Joseph ’s Centre for the Visually Impaired.

It will begin from the front entrance of Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre with Santa himself leading the way and continue across the road to St. Stephen’s Green. Derry men Vincent Edwards and Martin Gormley helped raise £12,500 for Autism NI when they climbed Ben Nevis in aid of the charity. Months of fundraising and training culminated when the pair, accompanied by over 30 others reached the summit last Saturday. The pair personally raised more than £500 each.
Leitrim partnership have awarded a grant to RainChild in County Leitrim. This is to enable them to establish a (sensory) toy / book library for children within the Autism spectrum. This is great news and the group are currently considering some good ideas from their membership. They are still open to suggestions both for purchases and the running / administration of such a scheme. Please put on you thinking hats and get in touch with Catherine Beirne with any ideas
