ABA schools change to special school status. Research participants wanted.

Dear ABA tutors & parents,
My name is Elaine Mc Hugh, I studied psychology in NUI Galway and I’m currently taking part in a masters in educational research with the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
I’m now in the process of conducting research which investigates the change of pilot ABA schools in Ireland to special school status. What I am most interested in is your perceptions of the reforms and attitudes towards different types of treatment options. I was wondering if you would be interested in being interviewed as part of this research. I am looking for people who have been directly impacted by these changes. Your personal information (and information about the associated school) will be confidential.
Please contact me if you are interested in taking part or if you have any questions.

To provide free ABA information and educational services (such as workshops, parent training/education, information newsletter) to members of the community who would derive benefit, such as parents of typically-developing children with problem behaviour, parents of children with autism, individuals with acquired brain injury. The aim is to help especially those who may not be able to afford fees for a behaviour analyst.

PEAT Autism Training - Structured Teaching Methods

17 Feb 2010 10:00
25 Feb 2010 17:00
Europe/Dublin

Many children with autism do not learn from their environment in the same way as their typically developing peers. Often, children with autism require more structured teaching approaches to help them learn new skills, such as pre-academic skills, and to encourage the use of language. In this workshop we will look at different methods of teaching that have been used effectively to teach children with autism. We will examine 3 main teaching approaches: Discrete Trial Teaching, Precision Teaching, and Incidental Teaching.

Croagh Patrick Challenge

Croagh Patrick Challenge, Mayo

We are a group of people from Mayo, mainly parents, who got together to raise funds for children with Autism in Mayo. We organise an event every March called the "The Seven Day in a Row Croagh Patrick Challenge". Many people take on the challenge for the full 7 days and many others support us by climbing one or more days. Our main aim is to help fund the opening of an ABA School (Applied Behaviour Analysis) in Mayo.

Treatments and Interventions

For many children, ASD symptoms improve with treatment and with age. Some children with autism grow up to lead normal or near-normal lives. Therapies and behavioural interventions are designed to remedy specific symptoms and can bring about substantial improvement.

Concerned parents call for autism support (Bright Starts, Kingscourt)

Anglo Celt, 19th November 2008

Bright Stars autism support group are making an urgent plea for families affected by autism to get in touch with them, so that they can rally support for their ongoing efforts for a special school for children with autism to be set up in this region.

The Kingscourt-based group currently has five members but they believe there are many more people who would benefit from the Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) tutoring that they are seeking to have made available in the Cavan area.

SPEAC Centre, Belfast

"SPEAC (Special Provision for the Education of Autistic Children) was founded by parents who, faced with the realities of living with a child with autism, shared a frustration with the lack of educational provision. Their response was to forge a unique partnership with the South-Eastern Education and Library Board (SEELB) to run a 3-year pilot project based at Tor Bank Special School in Belfast. The Centre provided a child-centred specialist education using the principles of Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) to children aged 4-11 who had autism and severe learning difficulties."

Dr. Vincent Carbone - Carbone Clinic

"Our mission is to provide evidence-based behavior analytic services to learners with autism and other developmental disabilities through direct services and training of family members and educators. We accomplish this by insuring that the learner’s progress occurs through the arrangement of teaching environments which are mostly positive and arranged to ultimately allow the learner to continue to develop language and other skills in typical community and family settings.

The AAP strongly believes in the importance of early and continuous surveillance and screening for ASD to ensure that children are identified and receive access to services as early as possible. The sooner autism is identified, the sooner an intervention program can start.
