ASD research

Dear Parents,

I am still looking for parents of children recently turned 3 years of
age or younger with ASD to participate in a study for an MSc in NUI
Galway. The study involves a short questionnaire on the other issues
apart from ASD that your children may suffer from, eg sleeping and
eating problems. It is the first study of its kind in Ireland.

I would be very grateful for your input - it'll only take around 20 minutes to complete, its
anonymous and I plan to publish the research findings  and present them at
conferences. I need to gather all my research by the end of September 2011.

The Short Life of a Diagnosis

By Simon Baron-Cohen. A version of this article appeared in print on November 10, 2009 of the New York Times.

THE Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, published by the American Psychiatric Association, is the bible of diagnosis in psychiatry, and is used not just by doctors around the world but also by health insurers.

PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance Syndrome)

Pathological Demand Avoidance Syndrome (PDA) is a pervasive developmental disorder. and is related to, but not the same as Autism and Asperger Syndrome.

Individuals with PDA are typically socially manipulative with people, and therefore superficially socially skilled, which sets them apart from Autism and Asperger Syndrome.

The most central characteristic of people who have Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is their obvious and obsessional avoidance of the ordinary demands of everyday life.

SOLAS Assessment Center, Dublin

The Solas Centre was set up as a result of a conversation between 4 people in 2003 who identified the distinct lack of a cohesive provision of diagnostic services in Ireland. Cormac Rennick, Marc De Salvo, Servass Dobedier as founder members of IAA and parents of children with autism, and Allan Willis, Educational Psychologist, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to raise funds for their project. Their climb was symbolic of the obstacles people with autism and their families have to climb every day.

Autism (ASD)

Autism is a developmental disorder characterized by disturbance in language, perception and socialization. A variety of biochemical, anatomical and neuroradiographical studies imply a disturbance of brain energy metabolism in autistic patients. The underlying aetiology of the disturbed bioenergetics metabolism in autism is still unknown.

PDD-NOS

Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS)

PSS-NOS is an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The term or label PDD-NOS is included in DSM-IV (diagnostic manual)  to encompass cases where there is marked impairment of social interaction, communication, and/or stereotyped behavior patterns but just falls short of an Autism or similar ASD diagnosis.

Basically PDD-NOS is a diagnosis on the 'subthreshold'  of the Autism diagnosis.

Therefore, to understand PDD-NOS, see instead ....

Childhood Disentegrative Disorder (CDD)

Childhood disintegrative disorder (CDD) is a condition first occurring in 3 to 4 year olds which is characterized by deterioration, over several months, of intellectual, social, and language functioning. Also known as disintegrative psychosis or Heller's syndrome.

This rather rare condition was described many years before autism but has only recently been 'officially' recognized.

With CDD children develop a condition which resembles autism but only after a relatively prolonged period of clearly normal development.

Rett Syndrome

Rett syndrome (RTT) is characterized by abnormal social and language development and accopmained by repetitive behaviours. In this way it is similar to autism.

The onset of the disorder is not evident from birth but may occur between 5-30month and is accompainied by a deceleration in head growth.

Loss of muscle tone is usually the first symptom.

Other early symptoms may include problems crawling or walking and diminished eye contact.

As the syndrome progresses, a child will lose purposeful use of her hands and the ability to speak.

Autism Spectrum Disorders Booklet

Learning that your child has an Autism Spectrum Disorder can be overwhelming. It can also be a relief. It is normal to feel a range of emotions and normal for family members to process their emotions differently.

Take time to care for yourself and each other. It is important to remember that your child, after being diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, is still the same child as before the diagnosis. It may take time to come to terms with this new information. Learning more about autism can help equip you to provide what is best for your child.
