The Fourth Annual World Autism Awareness Day is April 2, 2011. Every year, autism organisations around the world celebrate the day with unique fundraising and awareness-raising events.
On Friday April 1st and Friday April 8th, Irish Autism Action will be holding bucket collections throughout the country to help raise valuable funds for the organisation. We would greatly appreciate your support if you see our collectors out on the streets. If anyone would like to volunteer an hour or two of their time to help out, please call Colette on 044 93 42576.
Cuts to special needs resources deplorable
As a primary school teacher and a parent, I deplore the latest cynical move by the Department of Education and Skills (DES) which has "paused" any resource hours being allocated to any child with special needs.
Resulting from their latest circular, no new child presenting with special needs will be granted resource hours, but must be included in mainstream classes.
The DES has two huge questions to answer, in accounting for this action. How are they cherishing and supporting the child with special needs, by reducing/removing their support system? And how are they cherishing the children without special needs, who will have drastically reduced access to teacher time?

A Framework for Introducing Young People to their Autistic Spectrum Condition
Presented by Peter Vermeulen,
The Centre for Concrete Communication, Belgium
Explaining autism to a person with autism or asperger’s syndrome is not an easy task. This workshop on I am Special explains now to do this in a very concrete way. The hands-on experience-oriented demonstrations and exercises introduce the participants to the methods that lie at the basis of the workbook.
People with Disabilities Ireland (PWDI) with the support of Autism Spectrum Disorder Initiatives (ASDI) are hosting a one day conference...

Does your child have Aspergers Syndrome?
My name is Marie Carthy and I am conducting research to explore the impact on parents when their child is diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome. I am a 4th year Counselling & Psychotherapy student at Dublin Business School. I currently offer a counselling service in Mullingar with IAA to parents of children on the Autism Spectrum and to adults with Aspergers Syndrome.
In order to carry out this important research, I need your help. I will need to interview parents of children who have Aspergers Syndrome. By interviewing parents I will gain an understanding of the impact the diagnosis has on parents and their family life.
Interviews will only take 30-40 minutes. Personal information, names of interviewees will be strictly confidential and will not be mentioned in the research paper.
