The Abbey Community College in Boyle is being approved to deliver classes in Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
It's one of 39 schools nationwide to get the go ahead for the programme, which starts this September.
Roscommon based Senator John Kelly who’s welcoming the announcement, says it's important that these classes, which facilitate the education of children with severe autism, are part of the mainstream system, thereby aiding their integration into the wider school community.
It is expected that these classes will assist six children with ASD, which will be delivered by a dedicated teacher and two special needs assistants.
Local TD Frank Feighan is also welcoming the announcement.

The Carers Association wishes to apologise to all who their supporters for the Cancellation of The Tullamore Gospel Choir Concert which was due to take place in the Sacred Heart Church Roscommon on Wednesday 24th November at 8pm. Cancellation is due to the recent turn of events in the current economic climate. Refunds on tickets sold will be available at the outlets where purchased. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
The choir was costing Euro2000 for the night and only 50 tickets had been sold. I know I would have got more people on the night but it still probably would not have brought in enough to pay the choir.
Apologies again to those who hoped to attend.

Christmas has come early for five year-old Calum Leyden from Strokestown. Calum is enjoying a new lease of life thanks to his new canine companion, Juni, an assistance dog for families with children with Autism.
Councillor Orla Leyden has proposed that a seven acre field owned by the local council in the Lisnamult area of Roscommon town be used for an all weather sports area to cope with a range of sports as well as giving Special Olympics athletes somewhere to train.
At present many sports groups have to travel to Castelrea or Athlone to use all weather facilities and a proposal to develop the Lisnamult site would be aided by the local Residents' and Tenants' Association, chaired by Anthony Doolan, who are open to working with other groups for the good of their community.
The Health Service Executive says an investigation into a residential care centre for people with intellectual disabilities in Carrick on Shannon does not involve any member of staff at the facility.
