PEAT Autism Training - Structured Teaching Methods

17 Feb 2010 10:00
25 Feb 2010 17:00
Europe/Dublin

Many children with autism do not learn from their environment in the same way as their typically developing peers. Often, children with autism require more structured teaching approaches to help them learn new skills, such as pre-academic skills, and to encourage the use of language. In this workshop we will look at different methods of teaching that have been used effectively to teach children with autism. We will examine 3 main teaching approaches: Discrete Trial Teaching, Precision Teaching, and Incidental Teaching.

SPEAC Centre, Belfast

"SPEAC (Special Provision for the Education of Autistic Children) was founded by parents who, faced with the realities of living with a child with autism, shared a frustration with the lack of educational provision. Their response was to forge a unique partnership with the South-Eastern Education and Library Board (SEELB) to run a 3-year pilot project based at Tor Bank Special School in Belfast. The Centre provided a child-centred specialist education using the principles of Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) to children aged 4-11 who had autism and severe learning difficulties."
