Does your child often experience low moods, sleep problems, gastrointestinal issues or challenging behaviours? (July 2016)

We are looking for parents of children and adolescents with ASD aged 2 to 18 years that experience any of the above symptoms to take part in a study.

If your child does not present with any of the co-occurring disorders or symptoms mentioned, you can still take part! It is important for us to understand the effects co-occurring disorders have by including children with and without co-occurring symptoms.

If you would like to take part, or would like more information, please find the survey and further details at http://bit.ly/1UpXtvr, or email me at h.browne1@nuigalway.ie.

Many thanks,

Hannah Browne,

Studying the transition into mainstream schools (17/4/15)

I am currently studying Child Psychology online and am at a loss with an assignment. It is a case study based on a 10 year old girl with Autism. She is leaving school in 6 weeks time and will enter in to mainstream in September. She uses Lamh and PECS to communicate. She has visited her mainstream school several times and uses her PEC book to communicate with her SNA. She gets frustrated with other children as they cannot communicate with Lamh. Her parents are concerned with her as she is very tired in the evenings and not herself. Her mother had to collect her early from Primary School as Annie began to scream and no one knew what to do.

I need to describe a short term way, medium term way and long term way of providing for continuity and change as she moves to a new school. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Stories for a Autism documententary (15/9/14)

I'm writing to you from an independent television production company based in Dublin. We have been commissioned by RTE to research and develop an idea we submitted to them on the subject of autism. Our pitch to them was to explore
the world of autism through the experiences of a number of children and young adults and their families in an attempt to see the world from their perspective. We would also like to address various issues relating to this
spectrum via experts in their field.

We feel there hasn't been much Irish television devoted to this subject so we'd like to change this. I have an added interest because I trained and worked as a Special Ed. Montessori teacher years ago and I also have a special needs nephew who displays some autistic characteristics.

Foyle Sailability Water-based activity - Greencastle, Donegal (14/Aug/14)

14 Aug 2014 11:00
Europe/Dublin

A Chara,

Foyle Sailability is a cross-border voluntary organisation aimed at facilitating people with all types of disabilities access to water based activities. We successfully delivered a 2 day regatta in June (a few days before the Clipper boats arrived) where 120 people with disabilities from across the North West took to the water in specially adapted dinghies, clipper canoes and a motor boat.

We have received funding from Donegal County Council to run an event in Greencastle, Co. Donegal on 14 Aug from 11am-4pm and a disabled hoist will be available.

This is a free event but booking is essential and forms (from the attachment) should be returned to foylesailability@gmail.com or to Foyle Disability Resource Centre, Glen Road, Derry, BT48 0BX by Friday 8 August. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Asperges group for teens/young adults

Hi,

I am trying to find a group that meets up in the Leitrim/Longford/Roscommon area for older teenagers and young adults. Just an informal social group where they can be themselves, talk about what helps them, or talk about similar experiences, go out and do activities together.

If there is a group I would love to get in touch. Or if anyone would be interested in getting together.

Toileting Problems in Autism Spectrum Disorder (NUIG study 2013/2014)

Dear parent/carer,

My name is Kady Francis, I am currently a student of Psychology at the National University of Ireland Galway. I am conducting research into the area of toileting problems in children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and their relationship to sleep, quality of life, adaptive functioning and language.

I have a great interest in this topic and believe that it is an area which is extremely under researched.
I am hoping to recruit parents/carers of children with ASD aged between 4-17 years.

Participation requires filling out questionnaires about your child's specific behaviours. Questionnaires will be available in hardcopy and via email, depending on what suits parents best.

If you think you may be interested please contact me by email as soon as possible with the age of your child and I will send you further details. My email is k.francis2@nuigalway.ie

Identifying Risk Factors in Autism (NUIG Study 2013/2014)

The incidence of Autism Spectrum Disorders is rising in prevalence worldwide. We, here in NUIG, are would like to investigate some potential risk factors associated with this increasing trend.

Specifically, we are interested in studying the differences in brain size that occur prenatally in the womb.

Some previous studies demonstrated that the brains of children with Autism are smaller at birth which may suggest that differences in brain maturation may be occurring during their development in the womb. We expect that prenatal ultrasound records will help us determine if any differences in the size of the brain are present before birth.

Participation in this study involves giving us permission to view your ultrasound pregnancy scans that are stored in hospitals in the West of Ireland. All information would be confidential and anonymised so that your child’s records would not be identified.
